Strap Measurements for Bags
Guide to Bag Drop and Strap Lengths
For tote bags, over-the-shoulder bags, and crossbody styles, the drop is the vertical distance from the highest point of the handle or strap (its apex) to the top edge of the bag, measured when the piece hangs naturally. This key dimension determines how the bag rests on the body—whether comfortably over the shoulder, tucked under the arm, or worn crossbody—and helps ensure the ideal fit for your frame and style.
Note that drop length differs from overall strap length, which measures the full extent of the strap (including any hardware). When considering a strap, it’s also useful to note the hardware’s contribution for complete accuracy.
Metric measurements offer the greatest precision, though imperial equivalents are perfectly acceptable and may be rounded to the nearest quarter-inch for simplicity.
Recommended Drop for Tote Bags
For a versatile, everyday tote bag that sits comfortably and feels effortless to carry, the ideal drop typically falls between 25 cm and 30 cm (10" to 12"). This range allows the bag to rest naturally over the shoulder—even over winter layers—while positioning it at a convenient height for easy, graceful access to your belongings.
If you already have a tote you love and wear often, simply use a flexible tape measure to confirm your preferred fit: lay the bag flat and measure from the highest point of the strap (its apex) straight down to the center of the bag’s top edge. This will give you the most accurate reference for your new piece.
Typical Tote Bag Drops
Standard Shoulder Tote: 25cm to 30cm (10" - 12")
Handheld Tote: 18cm to 23cm (7" - 9")
Longer/Fashionable Totes: 30cm to 33cm (12" - 13")

Preferred Drop for Over-the-Shoulder Bags
If you already have an over-the-shoulder bag you wear often and enjoy, the most reliable way to find your ideal fit is to measure it. Lay the bag flat and, using a flexible tape measure, take the distance from the highest point of the strap (its apex) straight down to the center of the bag’s top edge.
For most over-the-shoulder styles, a comfortable and versatile drop falls between 23 cm and 30 cm (9" to 12"). This range allows the bag to rest naturally at your side—neither too high nor too low—ensuring ease of movement and effortless access while maintaining graceful proportion.
Typical drop in relation to type of over the shoulder bag:
Short: (Close fit): 18cm to 25cm (7" - 10")
Standard: 25cm to 35cm (10" - 14")
Long Shoulder: 33cm to 50cm+ (13" - 20"+)
If you have longer arms or plan to wear the bag over bulky winter coats, you may need a slightly longer drop 30 cm to 35cm (12" - 14") for comfort.
If you are over 173cm (5'8"), a 56cm (22"+) drop may be more comfortable for a longer shoulder look.

Preferred Drop for Crossbody Bags
If you already have a crossbody bag you wear often and enjoy, the simplest way to find your ideal fit is to measure it. Lay the bag flat and, using a flexible tape measure, take the distance from the highest point of the strap (its apex) straight down to the center of the bag’s top edge.
Should you not have a reference bag, measure directly on yourself: with a flexible tape, run it from the top of one shoulder, across the body, to the opposite side at the point where you would like the top of the bag to rest. Allow the tape to follow your body’s natural contours gently—without pulling it taut—so it mimics how a strap would drape comfortably.
For most crossbody styles, a drop between 51 cm and 61 cm (20" to 24") offers a balanced, accessible position. Chains are fixed in length, while leather straps can be crafted with adjustability for greater versatility.
A note on placement: the base of the bag will ideally sit near your hip bone for proportion and ease of use, though this can vary depending on the bag’s design and your personal preference.
If you have longer arms or anticipate wearing the bag over heavier layers such as winter coats, consider adding 2.5 to 5 cm (1" to 2") to your measurement. This small adjustment ensures the bag hangs at a comfortable, flattering height rather than riding too high.
Typical Drop by General Body Type/Height
Petite: Under 163cm (5'4"): 51cm to 56cm (20" – 22")
Average Height: 51cm to 170cm (5'4" - 5'7"): 56cm to 61cm (22" - 24")
Tall: Above 173cm (5'8"): 63cm to 68cm+ (25" - 27"+)
Ideal Drop for Versatile Crossbody/Shoulder Bags
For a bag designed to transition seamlessly between crossbody and over-the-shoulder wear, the most versatile drop typically ranges from 51 cm to 61 cm (20" to 24").
This length allows the bag to rest comfortably across the body in a diagonal crossbody position while remaining short enough to sit naturally and accessibly on one shoulder—offering effortless flexibility without compromising elegance or ease of use.
