I source the finest leathers, both natural vegetable tanned and chrome tanned from France, Italy, Japan, England and the United States.​

Vegetable tanned leathers are prized for their natural beauty, exceptional durability, and the unique way they age with grace.​

Vegetable tanning is an ancient, slow process that relies on natural tannins extracted from tree bark, rather than chemicals. This traditional method — still practiced by master tanneries in Tuscany — yields leather with a rich, supple character: visible grain variations, subtle depth of colour, and a patina that deepens beautifully over time, telling the story of its journey.

Vegetable tanned leather takes much longer to produce (weeks and even months) and is inconsistent by simple virtue of its completely natural essence - no two animals have the same wrinkles or grain, which is visible through the dye. ​

In the case of vegetable tanned leather, each hide is selected for its quality and personality. I embrace the natural marks and nuances that make every skin unique — small scars, veining, or tonal shifts become signatures of authenticity rather than flaws.

Chrome-tanned leather offers certain advantages that complement our heirloom ethos: it delivers exceptional suppleness and flexibility from the start, creating softer, more pliable items that feel luxurious against the skin with minimal break-in time, which is ideal for pieces like linings, or accessories that prioritize immediate softness and sumptuousness like the Bouclier Ultimate Folio, La Vache Safari tote, or the Maxi Duffle Bucket. ​

Its natural water and stain resistance provides practical protection in real-world use, making it highly durable against moisture, spills, and everyday wear without sacrificing refinement. Chrome tanning also enables a broader spectrum of vibrant, colorfast hues that hold their richness over time, allowing for bolder or more nuanced shades.​

Bouclier pieces are entirely handmade. No mass production, no shortcuts. Techniques include:
 

• Precise hand-stitching with waxed thread (saddle stitching), executed stitch-by-stitch for strength and elegance (more delicate products are stitched with waxed linen thread and where something stronger is needed high quality bonded and waxed polyester thread).

• Meticulous edge finishing — hand-painted or burnished, and polished to a satin sheen

• Thoughtful hand-dyeing in layered applications, as seen in my oceanic inspired turquoise belts where dye is built gradually to create living, undulating depth reminiscent of Mediterranean waters

• Delicate hand-riveting for embellishments like our signature rhinestone studs, each set individually to catch light with jewel-like precision

Special pieces demand additional time and specialized skill. I invest that care without compromise, ensuring integrity and refined beauty even in the most ambitious commissions.

We also prioritize ethical and sustainable choices: our leather is biodegradable and produced with respect for the environment. Our hardware is selected for longevity — solid brass, copper or stainless steel that resists wear and complements the leather's evolution.​
